Wolverhampton Wanderers need to improve on a below-par Championship campaign and nabbing Preston’s Jordan Hugill would be a good start.

Wolves boss Paul Lambert claimed recently that the club would attempt to make a small number of key signings this summer after the disastrous transfer window of 2016, the Birmingham Mail reports.

This could mean fewer unknown Iberian imports and more players with Championship experience under their belt, capable of making an immediate impact at Molineux. And it appears that Lambert is following through on his word.

HITC sources tell us that Wolves have made a £2 million opening bid for Preston North End’s strapping frontman Jordan Hugill. And signing the Middlesbrough-born striker would certainly represent a step in the right direction for a club that finished 15th in the Championship with a measly 54 goals to their name.

After all, Hugill netted 12 times for Preston in 2016/17, his poachers instinct and aerial ability making him one of the division’s most impressive all-round centre-forwards. And his natural-born qualities would surely come in handy at Wolves – especially with Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Nouha Dicko netting just six between them and top scorer Helder Costa expected to leave.

Furthermore, although Lambert’s direct tactics have divided the fanbase, they would surely be more effective if he had a player of Hugill’s impressive physical qualities leading the line.

The 24-year-old, who moved to Deepdale from Port Vale in 2014, is an excellent outlet in a lone striker system, capable of bringing his team-mates into play with flick-ons or well-placed lay-offs. Therefore, it’s tempting to believe he could form an effective partnership with 10-goal midfielder David Edwards, renowned for breaking into the box from deep.

HITC sources add that Preston are determined to keep hold of one of their most impressive performers but if Wolves are to improve on a disappointing campaign, signing Hugill would be a statement of intent.
