Signing Hearts winger Sam Nicholson this summer is a no-brainer for cash-strapped Rangers

Would the 22-year-old improve Rangers’ first-team options?

You do not need a degree in accountancy to know that Rangers are hardly lighting their cigars with £50 notes right now. The string of ill-advised, second-rate summer signings rather give away the fact that they have approached the transfer market with one arm tied behind their back in recent times.

Although that does not mean they are forced to hand out one last payday to forgotten has-beens a la Philippe Senderos.

If Rangers are to develop a team for the long-term, there are some real gems hidden away in the undergrowth of the domestic market, as the Daily Record reports.

The publication claimed back in December that Rangers were preparing to offer Hearts winger Sam Nicholson a pre-contract agreement with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

Not only would the signing of the 22-year-old, who has averaged a goal every three games in an injury hit season, improve Rangers’ first-team options, it would also be a hammer blow to the side just below Graeme Murty’s in the table.

The Daily Record adds that Nicholson has little interest in extending his stay at Tynecastle and is the subject of interest from clubs south of the border.

And the goal-scoring wide man would surely add an extra edge to an often blunt Gers attack. Despite starting just eight league games this season, he has outscored all but three Rangers players in the Scottish Premiership.

Furthermore, at just 22 he has much room for improvement so his arrival on a free would almost guarantee profit somewhere down the line.
