Cristian Gamboa left West Bromwich Albion for Scottish Premiership giants Celtic in 2016 – but could he head back to The Hawthorns?

So far Burnley might have been left disappointed in their attempts to sign Craig Dawson from West Brom.

But it seems only a matter of time before the versatile defender, who has attracted interest from a whole host of top flight sides recently, bids farewell to The Baggies following their relegation from the Premier League.

So a replacement right-back will be required. But what about re-signing a player who left The Hawthorns in 2016? Should Cristian Gamboa, who earned a move to West Brom on the back of the Brazil World Cup, be handed a second chance in the Midlands due to his fine performances in Russia?

Some supporters seem to think so. 28-year-old Gamboa never managed to hold down a place at West Brom, making just 11 Premier League appearances in two years after joining from Norwegian outfit Rosenborg.

And he has struggled just as much at Celtic, where he started two league games in 2017/18.

At international level, however, Gamboa looks a man transformed.

He was superb at either end in Costa Rica’s heartbreaking 2-0 defeat to Brazil on Friday, keeping Neymar on the periphery right until the last few minutes while causing no end of problems at the other end with his trademark speed.

But does he deserve a second chance with the Baggies?
