De Jong was one of the greatest players in the Eredivisie during his time with Ajax but failed spectacularly on Tyneside.
Loaned-out Newcastle United midfielder Siem De Jong insists that he wants to return to St James’ Park at the end of the season so he can play in the Premier League, Football Oranje report.
A succession of injuries limited the Dutch international to just 26 appearances across three years on Tyneside, with the former Ajax captain unable to replicate the kind of influential performances that saw him knock Manchester City out of the Champions League in 2011 by netting three times in two games against Roberto Mancini’s team.
Consequently, De Jong, who was kept out of action for a number of months with a collapsed lung during his time with the Magpies, was sent back to Holland on a temporary deal, joining Eredivisie champions PSV.
His winner in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Go Ahead Eagles kept Phillip Cocu’s stalling side within touching distance of the top and, after the game, the midfielder confirmed that his stay at PSV would only be short-term.
“I would definitely like to succeed at Newcastle United,” De Jong said in quotes reported by Football Oranje. “It would be a nice scenario that they are promoted first and then I return to play in the Premier League.”
However, even a fully fit De Jong may struggle to get into Rafael Benitez’s side at present with Jonjo Shelvey, Yoan Gouffran and Matt Ritchie nailing down their roles in the side.
