Wigan Athletic’s Championship winger Michael Jacobs would potentially be an excellent signing for Scottish Premiership giants Rangers.

Steven Gerrard has certainly made an impact at Rangers. Not only does he appear to be getting the best out of the talented group of players at his disposal, the Liverpool legend also appears to have made the Glasgow giants a much more tempting destination for potential transfer targets.

Gerrard is, after all, one of the most influential players of his generation and has earned plenty of admirers after more than a decade at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield.

Michael Jacobs is certainly a big fan. Speaking to Wigan Athletic’s official website, the 26-year-old has admitted that he looked up to the current Rangers boss during his own days as a budding professional.

“I liked Steven Gerrard because I was a Liverpool fan growing up. I didn’t want to replicate him on the pitch in terms of playing style, but I loved his desire and he went on to achieve a lot throughout his career,” Jacobs said when asked to name his all-time favourite player.

But should Rangers see this as an opportunity? The former Wolves and Derby midfielder has been a revelation in three years at Wigan. He scored 12 goals and set up nine more as Wigan won the League One title last season and, like his side, has taken to the Championship like a duck to water with two goals in six games since promotion.

Rangers, then, should perhaps consider a January move for a man who could be tempted by the idea of learning under his idol Gerrard.

After all, with Ryan Kent only on loan from Liverpool, there is room in Rangers’ squad for another left winger.
