Paul Heckingbottom was keen to sign Simon Eastwood for Barnsley from Oxford United, but Leeds United would be a good fit for the goalkeeper?
Simon Eastwood was denied his big break during the January transfer window.
According to Sky Sports, the talented goalkeeper was the subject of interest from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, who were on the lookout for a new shot-stopper after Craig Gordon was ruled out for up to three months.
Oxford refused to sell, however, which not only frustrated Brendan Rodgers but Paul Heckingbottom, too.
Because the report states that Heckingbottom was keen to lure Eastwood to Barnsley. Although with the 40-year-old now appointed as the new manager at Leeds United, it will be interesting to see whether Eastwood is linked with a move to Elland Road in the near future.
After all, Heckingbottom will be inheriting a side who could do with a bit of a shake up between the sticks. Felix Wiedwald has delivered some improved displays of late, particularly in the goalless draw with Hull City, but is still prone to errors and appears to instil a sense of shakiness in the back-line.
Andy Lonergan, meanwhile, is out of favour having not featured in a Championship game since November. And, according totun (4 February, page 60), Leeds would have let him leave for Sunderland if they had a replacement lined up.
So with neither of Leeds’ goalkeepers really convincing, it would be no surprise if Heckingbottom decided to pursue Eastwood again now he has been announced as Thomas Christiansen’s Elland Road successor.
