Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka was impressed with defender Thomas Lam in pre-season but he has not made a Championship appearance since.
Thomas Lam looked like he could have saved his Nottingham Forest career with some positive performances in pre-season.
The Finnish defender appeared to have no future at the City Ground after spending the whole of last season out on loan to Eredivisie club FC Twente, who were relegated amid huge financial problems.
And, as recently as late July, manager Aitor Karanka admitted he had been impressed with Lam’s displays over the summer, adding that the 24-year-old had given him a selection headache. That was then, however, and the present does not look anywhere near as promising.
Forest are three games into the new Championship season and Lam has not once featured in any of their matchday squads. And Gianluca Di Marzio has now claimed that Crotone have made contact as they aim to put together a squad capable of promotion from Serie B.
Despite all of Lam’s hard work over the last few weeks, it seems now is time to get rid of a player who was part of the Phillipe Montanier-driven recruitment drive of 2016.
Forest can call on Michael Dawson, Tobias Figueiredo, Danny Fox, Joe Worrall and even Jack Robinson at centre-back, leaving Lam well down the pecking order.
He might have had a point to prove but it seems his hopes of a return to the first-team are being blocked by the quantity and quality of players ahead of him.
