John Welsh is leaving Preston North End after six years and should be an option for the Lilywhites’ Championship rivals Nottingham Forest.

Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka is expected to make big changes to his squad again this summer, with the Nottingham Post claiming that up to ten new signings are being targeted at the City Ground.

And it is in the centre of midfield in particular where reinforcements could be required. The injury-riddled Chris Cohen (below) will be forced to retire at the end of this season, while fellow veteran David Vaughan could leave too, with his contract running out.

And then you consider Jack Colback, the loanee from Newcastle United, whose wages could be too expensive for a permanent deal to be a genuine possibility.

Adlene Guedioura and Andreas Bouchalakis, meanwhile, have impressed in fits and bursts but need more consistency if they are to become integral cogs in the Karanka plan.

So there could be a space in Forest’s midfield for an experienced, warrior-like figure. Someone, perhaps, like John Welsh.

The 34-year-old Liverpudlian is set to be a free agent this summer with his contract at Preston North End expiring. And the Preston fans have taken to Twitter to bid farewell to a modern club legend who amassed almost 200 appearances for the Lilywhites.

Now, White might not be the most technically gifted or youthful of players but his leadership qualities could come in handy for a youthful side set to lose two of their most experienced and long-serving players this summer.
