The midfielder has been in superb form in 2017 for PSV Eindhoven and Newcastle United remain on the lookout for creative talent.

Newcastle United are hardly enduring what you would describe as a ‘difficult’ campaign. Barring a few shock defeats and the odd poor performance, they have been otherwise imperious and, with a quarter of the season remaining, are on course for an immediate return to the top flight.

However, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez remains concerned about the apparent lack of creativity and goal threat from central midfield.

Therefore, it is somewhat surprising that the chance to renew their interest in a 2015 target, as reported by the Daily Mail, passed them by.

The Mail claimed that Newcastle had identified Chelsea midfielder Marco Van Ginkel as a primary target after the former Dutch prodigy had struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge, not to mention a forgettable loan spell with AC Milan.

Almost two years on, the now-24-year-old is still yet to re-establish his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders.

Yet if his form in 2017 is anything to go by, Van Ginkel has both the talent and the time to turn a hitherto disappointing career into a success.

Van Ginkel somewhat bizarrely signed a new contract at Chelsea until 2019 prior to his loan return to the Eredivisie in January but, with Antonio Conte hardly short of midfield options, it is likely he will be available once more in the summer.

And Benitez, on the lookout for productive midfield targets, not to mention owner Mike Ashley, on the lookout for young players with a potential re-sale value, could do worse than hand this struggling talent a lifeline.
