Should Leeds United target Pedro Chirivella as Ryan Kent consolaton?

Pedro Chirivella has a big future at Liverpool – but a move to Leeds United would be beneficial for all parties.

If Leeds United wanted another indication that they should target 20-year-old winger Ryan Kent (above) this summer, beyond his impressive form on loan at Yorkshire rivals Barnsley that is, it’s that The Sun reports that Liverpool are determined to offer him a new deal to fend off interest from elsewhere.

The publication reports that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp sees Kent as a crucial part of his plans going forward and, with the likes of Ben Woodburn, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ovie Ejaria all being slowly exposed to first-team life at Anfield since the German’s arrival, you could see why The Tykes loanee could be convinced to stay.

However, even if Leeds are left disappointed by their failure to swoop for a player who has caught the eye of Garry Monk, they could at least aim for a consolation prize.

While Leeds have performed well above expectations this season, recent performances against the likes of QPR, Ipswich Town and Cardiff City have raised concerns about the lack of creative ball-players in a workmanlike midfield containing the likes of Liam Bridcutt, Ronaldo Vieira and Eunan O’Kane.

If The Whites are to progress further, a player capable of dictating tempo like a Dale Stephens or a Jonjo Shelvey may be required. Therefore, a season-long loan deal for Pedro Chirivella could suit all parties.

Klopp handed the 19-year-old, Valencian born midfielder his Premier League debut last season and the German didn’t hold back on the praise.

“He is a wonderful player. He is a passing player and a big, big talent,” Klopp said in quotes reported by The Express.

Currently on loan at Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie, Chirivella’s 84 per cent pass completion rate highlights his composure in possession – and attribute the centre of Leeds’ midfield could do with improving.

It is likely that Chirivella will be loaned out again next season and a chance to broaden his experience of English football would benefit Liverpool long term. And potentially, if they make a move, it will help out Leeds on a short-term basis too.
