Scott McKenna’s Scottish Premiership form has earned Scott McKenna plenty of suitors and Everton should be among them.
Everton have five centre-backs to choose from as it stands, but that number could fall in the near future.
After all, Kurt Zouma is only on loan from Chelsea and he has indicated that he believes his future remains at Stamford Bridge. The 36-year-old Phil Jagielka, meanwhile, only has a contract until next summer and time will tell whether he will be offered another one-year deal after struggling with injuries of late.
So the smart move would perhaps be for Everton to start eyeing potential replacements in the New Year with director of football Marcel Brands attempting to put together a young and promising team at Goodison Park.
According to the Sun (30 September, page 59), a number of sides have been sending scouts to watch Aberdeen’s £10 million-rated centre-back Scott McKenna, with ambitious Wolverhampton Wanderers currently at the front of the queue.
The Dons ace has a few attributes that mark him out as a potential successor to Jagielka on Merseyside. McKenna is a strong, physically imposing centre-back whose distribution perhaps remains slightly underrated.
He is a leader, too. The fact he captained Scotland on only his fourth international appearance speaks volumes.
So, with doubts over the long-term future of Jagielka and Zouma, McKenna should be one player on Everton’s radar. They are arguably in greater need of new defenders than Wolves, after all, with Ryan Bennett, Conor Coady and Willy Boly taking to life in the Premier League impressively.
