Denver Hume stood out as League One Sunderland faced Championship Stoke City in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday night.

It has been a horrible couple of years for Sunderland, but at least the club’s array of talented youngsters have given the fans something to look forward to.
19-year-old Josh Maja is the Black Cats’ top-scorer so far this season with four goals in six League One games, while fellow academy graduates George Honeyman and Bali Mumba have impressed in the centre of midfield.
Left-back Denver Hume, meanwhile, could be the next academy graduate to make his mark in the first-team.

The 22-year-old made his third appearance of the season in the Checkatrade Trophy clash with Stoke City on Tuesday, scoring the winning goal in the penalty shootout after a goalless draw.
“I’ve been really pleased with him all through pre-season and into the season, he has been one who adapted to how we train and how we do things and he has flourished under it,” manager Jack Ross told the Chronicle.
But Ross is not the only one who has been impressed by Hume, who started at right-back against Stoke. A number of Sunderland fans have sent messages to the Northumberland-born defender on Twitter, expressing a desire for him to feature more regularly over the coming months.
With Ross on board, do not be surprised if Hume follows Maja, Honeyman, Mumba and co into the starting XI.
