Andreas Granqvist has been linked with a move to Premier League giants Manchester United but should Scottish Premiership champions Celtic be keen?
There has been plenty of eyebrow raising stories about Manchester United flying around recently and this is perhaps the oddest of them all.
According to Fotboll Direkt, the crisis-ridden Premier League giants are lining up a stunning January swoop for the 33-year-old Sweden international. Granqvist himself has added credence to the reports, admitting that he’s ‘flattered’ to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.
But if the Helsingborgs veteran is keen on one last big move in the autumn of his career, Celtic should be scrambling to be at the front of the queue.
Granqvist was linked with a move to Parkhead as far back as 2010, according to the Daily Record, and now he would perhaps be a better addition than ever, even at the ripe old age of 33.
Granqvist may be a short term option but he is a real leader, an inspirational figure in Sweden’s qualification for the World Cup via a two legged playoff victory against Italy. And in those two legs against the Azzurri, the one-time Wigan Athletic defender showed that he hasn’t lost any of his defensive instincts either.
And though he’s not the archetypal Celtic signing, Granqvist would offer leadership and big-game experience in a youthful back-line while perhaps proving to be a mentor for the much younger Kristoffer Ajer.
