Lasse Vibe could leave Brentford in January with his contract running out – and Championship rivals Aston Villa should take a punt on him.

Scott Hogan of Aston Villa looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Middlesbrough at Villa Park on September 12, 2017 in Birmingham, England.

Aston Villa have very little money to spend in January thanks to the constraints of Financial Fair Play. The situation was a little different a year ago, however, when Villa spent £12 million (BBC) to sign Brentford striker Scott Hogan after a prolific first half of the season at Griffin Park.

In hindsight, they may be wondering why they had bothered. The Villa number nine has scored one Championship goal in 28 games for the club – though his impact has not been helped by a series of niggling injuries.

Though Hogan’s high-profile failure should not put Villa off from attempting a bargain deal for his one-time Brentford strike partner.

According to GetWestLondon, Lasse Vibe will be a free agent at the end of this season and, as it stands, Brentford are yet to enter talks about a new deal. As such, it appears likely that the 30-year-old could be sold on a cut-price deal in January with Brentford likely to sign a younger player in his place – as is their usual approach to recruitment.

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce wants a striker with a proven Championship track-record who will also come cheap – but he will know that finding one is like hens’ teeth. The Birmingham Mail states that Villa are interested in Leicester City’s Leonardo Ulloa and Burnley’s Nahki Wells, but it remains unknown whether they would be allowed to leave on loan.

Though Villa might have the funds to afford a swoop for Vibe, who had scored 29 goals in the last two Championship seasons.
