Summer Rangers target Ben Heneghan could be set for a return to the Scottish Premiership after struggling badly at Championship side Sheffield United.
Ben Heneghan’s move to Sheffield United from Motherwell has not exactly gone to plan so far.
The centre-back has not made a single first-team appearance for the Blades since his £400,000 move to Brammal Lane. And, according to The Sun, Heneghan could even be set for a return to Fir Park this month.
It is understood that the 24-year-old has grown frustrated with his complete lack of opportunities under Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder and his old Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson admits that he would jump at the chance to bring him back.
Although a short-term loan spell at his former club will not silence the nagging feeling that Heneghan perhaps made the wrong decision when moving away in the summer. The defender had other options after all, the Daily Record confirming that Rangers were keen to keep him north of the border.
And it is not beyond the realms of possibility to state that, while Heneghan has failed to force his way into Sheffield United’s side, he could have been a key man at Ibrox.
According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers are looking to offload Portuguese pair Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso this month with centre-back duo both out of favour under manager Graeme Murty.
Their inability to adapt to Scottish football could have opened up an opportunity for Heneghan to establish himself in the heart of Rangers’ defence, particularly with the excellent Ross McCrorie adopting a new defensive midfield role in recent weeks.
Yet with Motherwell making their interest known, it will be interesting to see whether Rangers consider renewing their own interest in the highly-rated Heneghan.
