Sunderland midfielder George Honeyman has been linked with Championship rivals Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.

Just a few weeks ago, Sheffield Wednesday looked an outside bet for a place in the top six. These days, however, The Owls could hardly be further away from challenging for promotion right now.
Jos Luhukay’s side were humiliated at home to Norwich City on Saturday, going down 4-0 to Daniel Farke’s high-flying Canaries. As a result, Wednesday have slipped to 17th in the Championship table and they are just four points above the drop zone.
And, just to make matters worse, bitter rivals Sheffield United could now sign a player who Wednesday were apparently very keen to bring to Hillsborough.
The Chronicle reported in May that Sheffield Wednesday were at the front of the queue to sign Sunderland midfielder George Honeyman, who was one of the few bright sparks as The Black Cats were relegated from the Championship last season.

But The Sun now reports that Steel City neighbours United have joined the race with Chris Wilder begging the board to splash the cash. Honeyman has matured greatly this season, captaining a Sunderland side who are fighting for promotion from League One.
Sheffield United appear to have a genuine shout at Premier League football under Wilder while another season of struggle beckons for Wednesday. So, right now, it looks like one club is a better fit for Honeyman than the other.
