Joao Moutinho certainly arrived at Wolverhampton Wanderers with a big reputation having won titles in Portugal and France, not to mention earning 113 caps in a storied career in the Portuguese national team.
But the 32-year-old has arguably exceeded expectations since joining from Monaco for a bargain £5 million.
Moutinho has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water even at his advanced age and scored his first goal in English football in Wolves’ impressive 1-1 draw away at Manchester United on Saturday.
The former Sporting Lisbon and Porto playmaker has been included in Alan Shearer’s Team of the Week as a result. And the BBC pundit believes that Jose Mourinho could do with his near-namesake in the heart of United’s midfield.
“The Portuguese produced a magnificent performance and goal. He also showed the energy and desire that his opponents lacked,” Shearer told the Premier League website.
Alongside fellow Iberian Ruben Neves, Moutinho was arguably the best player on the pitch at Old Trafford, outshining the £27 million Marouane Fellaini and £89 million World Cup winner Paul Pogba.
If there was an award for the best bargain of the season, Moutinho would be the front-runner right now.
