The first of many for Brendan Rodgers at Celtic? It certainly seems like the beginning of an era.

Celtic fan and former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has congratulated Brendan Rodgers on Twitter after winning the first major honour of his managerial career.

A Hoops’ side even without star winger Scott Sinclair swept aside Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Sunday afternoon, Tom Rogic, James Forrest and Moussa Dembele all on target to secure the Scottish League Cup title.

The win marked the first piece of silverware of Rodgers’ reign in charge of the Glasgow giants and the first of his career as a whole, having fallen at the final hurdle in the 2013/14 Premier League title race while running the show at Liverpool.

And Given, who started his career at Celtic before joining Blackburn Rovers on a free in the early-90’s, is hopeful that the trophy will set the tone for a successful couple of years under the Northern Irishman’s stewardship.

A first Scottish Premiership title already looks secure, with Celtic cruising 12 points clear of Old Firm rivals Rangers with two games in hand.

And Rodgers told reporters after his side cantered to victory in the capital that he feels it is a ‘privilege’ to manage Celtic, according to the Daily Record, with a genuine affinity between the manager and club ensuring that he is likely to get a taste for lifting trophies in green and white.
