After just one season in North London, Spurs are prepared to cash in on Fernando Llorente who has scored a single Premier League goal this season.
Tottenham Hotspur were toasting a job well done when they swooped in to nab Fernando Llorente from the clutches of bitter rivals Chelsea on transfer deadline day last summer.
But, once Llorente’s debut season in North London comes to an end, will he be remembered by Spurs fans along the same lines as the infamous £17 million flop Vincent Janssen?
The former Juventus and Athletic Bilbao targetman arrived to replace Janssen in the summer after all, after the Dutchman notched just one league goal from open play following his arrival from AZ Alkmaar 12 months earlier.
Janssen was farmed out to Fenerbahce on loan and Llorente, who had proven himself in England’s top flight, looked to give Spurs a far more convincing back-up option for Harry Kane.
But just one league start, and one league goal, later, The Standard reports that Tottenham are already prepared to cash in on the 33-year-old.
13 of Llorente’s 14 Premier League appearances have come from the bench and, worryingly, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino turned to Erik Lamela instead and pushed Heung-Min Son into a centre-forward role rather than bring the Spaniard off the bench when Kane suffered an injury away to Bournemouth on Sunday.
Son scored twice to inspire a 4-1 win and, in truth, Tottenham just do not carry the same threat when the static, ageing Llorente leads the line.
The harsh reality is that he has made no more of an impact than Janssen did during his dreadful spell in North London and Pochettino’s inability to take the pressure off his talisman Kane goes on.
