Scottish Premiership champions Celtic appear to be on the verge of signing Ecuador wonder-kid Sergio Quintero.
Celtic appear to have reached a breakthrough in talks to sign Ecuador wonderkid Sergio Quintero with the 20-year-old telling El Universo that an agreement to sign for the Premiership champions could be reached in the next few days.
It has been a case of quality, not quantity, so far for Neil Lennon’s side in the transfer market. Celtic have spent £10 million in an attempt to retain their place at the top of Scottish football, Boli Mbombo and Christopher Jullien arriving to reinforce the backline while coveted youngster Luca Connell has also been snapped up from Bolton Wanderers.
Quintero, however, could be the most exciting addition of the lot.
El Diario claimed in June that The Hoops were hoping to snap up the talented defensive midfielder from Ecuadorian outfit Imbabura SC with his performances during the recent U20 World Cup really catching the eye.
Nicknamed ‘The Machine’ for his all-action style, Quintero is one of the most impressive young enforcers in South American football.
And, speaking to El Universo, he’s hinted that he could even be unveiled as a Celtic player later in the week, although there is still work to be done yet.
“The representatives of Celtic were talking with the president of Imbabura. We have to reach an agreement this week,” he said.
“But if things do not happen I have proposals from other sides and also from Ecuador. You have to make the best decision.”
The best decision might just be Celtic. Over the years, little-known youngsters like Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama arrived in Glasgow from abroad before sealing big-money moves to the Premier League after taking Scottish football by storm.
