Sean Longstaff is starring on loan at Blackpool from Premier League giants Newcastle United but does his future lie at Ibrox with Rangers?
Sean Longstaff is seizing his chance away from St James’ Park in style.
The highly-rated midfielder is spending the season on loan at Blackpool in League One and showing exactly why he has been tipped for great things on Tyneside. Longstaff has been a shining light in a difficult season for the Tangerines and took his goals tally to seven for the campaign with a typically brilliant volley against Bury on Saturday.
It was a flash of individual quality which explains why Newcastle must do all they can to keep hold of Longstaff, a player with the undoubted potential to become the first academy graduate to force his way into the Magpies’ first-team since Paul Dummett (below).
It was also the sort of match-changing moment that explains why Rangers have been closely following the 20-year-old. According to the Chronicle, Longstaff’s form at Blackpool has a number of clubs keeping a close eye on his development with the Ibrox giants right at the front of the queue.
Longstaff is contracted to Newcastle until the summer of 2019, meaning the Magpies simply must tie him down to a longer-term deal to avoid running the risk of losing him for next to nothing sooner rather than later.
As long as his contract situation remains a little precarious, and he keeps walloping 25-yard strikes into the back of the net, Rangers should remain hot on Longstaff’s trail.
The Gers have brought in a number of midfielders since last summer, but none with the ability to score with such precision and regularity from the centre of the park.
And his quite fantastic strike against Bury should have Rangers fans drooling at the prospect of Longstaff strutting his stuff at Ibrox.
