Scunthorpe’s Jak Alnwick comments on his future at Rangers

Scottish Premiership giants Rangers loaned goalkeeper Jak Alnwick out to League One outfit Scunthorpe United in the summer transfer window.

It is little surprise that Jak Alnwick is enjoying his time at Scunthorpe United.

After 18 months stuck on the bench at Rangers, the goalkeeper returned to English football in August with a loan move to Glanford Park. And Alnwick is playing regular first-team football again, starting 16 league games for The Iron.

Understandably, the former Newcastle United prospect is not exactly counting down the days until he returns to Ibrox with Allan McGregor and Wes Foderingham still plying their trade north of the border.

Speaking to BBC Radio Humberside (14 December, 12pm), Alnwick has admitted that he would jump at the chance to turn his loan deal at Scunthorpe into a permanent transfer.

“I’ve had conversations with my agent and said I love it down here and want to keep playing”, the 25-year-old said.

“I’m not sure what they’re wanting to do, but from my personal point of view I want to keep playing games and there couldn’t be a better club for me to be at.

“I would love to stay but it is dependent on the club here if they want to keep me and it would depend if Rangers if they want to keep me out on loan. If everything comes together, then hopefully I can stay.”

It would certainly make sense for Alnwick to remain with the League One club. A return to Rangers would surely see the former Port Vale ‘keeper, who moved to Ibrox for £250,000 in January 2017, stuck in third choice.

Staying at Scunthorpe would give him the chance to nail down a regular starting place for the next few years. It remains to be seen yet, however, what Rangers’ plans are for the goalkeeper with McGregor 36 years of age and Foderingham’s future uncertain.
