Dorus de Vries missed Celtic’s 3-2 Old Firm win against Rangers at Ibrox, a potential Scottish Premiership decider.
Scott Bain finally made his Celtic debut in the dramatic 3-2 Old Firm derby win over Rangers on Sunday and it was worth the wait.
Not just because the Hoops surely sealed a seventh straight league title and put their boisterous neighbours back in their place for now, but because he was excellent between the sticks.
The shot-stopper, who arrived on loan from Dundee as cover for the injured Craig Gordon on January deadline day, made a fantastic save at 2-2 to keep out Alfredo Morelos and put Celtic en route to a nerve-settling victory at Ibrox.
So it would be a big surprise if the under-fire Dorus de Vries returns between the sticks next time out. The 37-year-old veteran initially came in to replace Gordon but has once again found himself on the wrong end of criticism.
A horrible flap in the Europa League second leg defeat to Zenit St Petersburg did nothing to quell the notion that De Vries, who struggled too in his debut season in Scotland, is an accident waiting to happen.
The former Swansea City sweeper-keeper has a contract at Celtic until 2019 but, with Bain now establishing himself and Gordon set to return before the season is out, he could soon become third choice.
And Bain, it must be mentioned, is out of contract this summer so what are the chances of Celtic signing him permanently if he continues to impress?
If that happens, Celtic fans might have seen the last of De Vries.
