Andrew Robertson failed to take his Premier League form into the international break, with Scotland losing against Israel.
Scotland can call on two of the most gifted full-backs anywhere in European football right now. Unfortunately for national team manager Alex McLeish, they both play on the left.
With the boss desperate to shoe-horn Celtic’s Kieran Tierney and Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson into the same starting XI, they were both left playing out of position in Scotland’s humiliating 2-1 UEFA Nations League defeat to Israel on Thursday.
Robertson, the new Scotland captain, struggled to replicate his Liverpool form at left-wing back while Tierney, who scored Israel’s winner with an own goal, toiled in a back three.
Speaking to the Scottish Football Podcast on BBC (11 October), Willie Miller has expressed disappointment with Robertson’s performance in particular.
“The wing-backs couldn’t have played any worse,” said Aberdeen legend Miller, who played for Scotland between 1975 and 1989.
“Andy Robertson gets forward on a couple of occasions and he couldn’t even keep his balls in the park, his crosses going behind the goal.”
Robertson has been arguably the best left-back in the Premier League since he moved from Hull City to Liverpool in 2017 for a bargain fee of £8 million.
The former Dundee United talent has already set up three goals in ten games this season, but the test now is whether he can replicate his club form at international level.
