Rangers’ crisis may have deepened further thanks to Friday’s 2-1 loss at Inverness but at least one man in particular can take pride in his performance.
Wes Foderingham has endured a difficult month between the sticks, enduring a horror show at Hearts and conceding the softest of free-kicks against Dundee, but, without his heroics at the Caledonian Stadium, another Rangers loss may have descended into humiliation territory once again.
A Greg Tansey long-ranger and an inspire overhead kick late on from Billy McKay dragged Inverness off the foot of the table but, apart from the evergreen impressive Kenny Miller, Foderingham was perhaps the only Rangers player to meet the standard required.
Springing to his left to keep out an Iain Vigurs penalty, the former Swindon shot-stopper also made a string of superb reaction saves in the second half, albeit in vain.
However, with intense criticism of his recent displays somewhat damaging his reputation north of the border, Foderingham remains a divisive figure among the Rangers support, an virtuoso performance against one of the league’s bottom sides not enough to make up for an otherwise mistake-filled month in the eyes of some supporters.
Nonetheless, it’s not the first time this season that the 26-year-old has bailed out his team’s combustible defence. All in all, Foderingham seems a strange choice for a scapegoat.
He can be inconsistent, yes. But few players in this current Rangers squad are capable of such moments of brilliant inspiration.
