Groningen’s Eredivisie defender Samir Memisevic was linked with a move to Celtic.
Celtic appear to have eased their defensive crisis, for now at least. But, once the January transfer window comes around, the same old problems could emerge.
Dedryck Boyata’s contract expires next summer and he is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January. That month would also be Celtic’s last chance to bring in any money for a player who would otherwise leave for free a few months later.
Furthermore, Filip Benkovic, who joined on loan from Leicester City on transfer deadline day, could return to the King Power as early as January, as reported by the Daily Record.
So Celtic would perhaps be better off planning for the possibility of losing Benkovic, Boyata or even both. And that is where Samir Memisevic comes in.
The Bosnian international was tipped to swap FC Groningen for Celtic in August, following in the footsteps of Virgil van Dijk after two impressive seasons in the Eredivisie. Oslobodenje claimed that the 6ft 1ins centre-back would be open to a move to Glasgow.
And Groningen’s consequent struggles should only make him more keen to join Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Going into the international break, Groningen are 16th, one point off the bottom of the table, and even Memisevic’s impressive displays at centre-back have not helped them avoid three defeats in four games.
So this is one to revisit in the New Year.
