Southampton will let Sam Gallagher leave on loan and Wolves, rather than Aston Villa, looks to be his most likely destination.

With John Ruddy adding experience in goal, Willy Boly and Roderick Miranda power and positioning at the back, Ruben Neves star quality in midfield and Diogo Jota jet-heeled creativity on the wings, Wolves have the basis of an excellent starting XI.

There is just one piece missing: a lethal centre-forward. Although that could be about to change with the Mirror claiming that Wolves are interested in signing Southampton striker Sam Gallagher on loan.

The report adds that the Saints are prepared to let the home-grown centre-forward leave, provided that he gets regular game-time at his temporary club. And that should be no concern at Wolves, who can count Nouha Dicko as their only senior centre-forward following Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s move to Reading.

And Gallagher appears to tick all the boxes for Wolves. Thriving in a dreadful Blackburn Rovers team last season, the 21-year-old scored 11 Championship goals despite the Lancashire giants eventually suffering relegation.

Excellent in the air and renowned for his impressive work-rate, there’s a reason Gallagher was given his chance by Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton in 2013/14. With Jota, Neves, Helder Costa and co creating chances, the former England Under-20 international could be the player that turns Wolves into play-off contenders.

Ticks all the boxes

And, just as an added bonus, his signing could be a major blow to Midlands rivals Aston Villa. Steve Bruce’s side have been linked for a number of months, via the Daily Mail, but their inability to sell their deadwood means their transfer activity has ground to a halt.

Only three sides scored fewer league goals than Villa last season and, with Jonathan Kodjia struggling with a broken ankle, Scott Hogan yet to make an impact and Ross McCormack available for transfer, Gallagher could have come in very handy.

As it stands, however, Bruce’s perfect signing could be set for Wolves instead.
