Sam Allardyce has been tipped to replace Mark Hughes at Premier League side Southampton.
Sam Allardyce saved Sunderland in 2016, rescued Crystal Palace in 2017, and could he now be parachuted in to perform another feat of escapism in charge of Southampton?
The pressure on Mark Hughes is huge right now after a 6-1 thrashing at Manchester City, meaning The Saints have won just one out of 11 Premier League games so far this season.
According to The Mirror (6 November, page 50), Hughes will be given the boot if Southampton fail to win against Watford this weekend – and the South Coast club have identified the experienced firefighter Allardyce as a potential replacement.
The 63-year-old is out of work after being replaced by Marco Silva at Everton but would he be tempted by a return to the Premier League? Speaking to Alan Brazil on talkSPORT (9 November, 9am), Allardyce suggests that we shouldn’t hold our breath.
“They’ve ruined themselves by selling. They’ve ruined the club, the stature and creating a new modern-day history by the fact that rather than keeping the players they’ve continually sold off their home grown talent first and then people like (Dejan) Lovren have moved on,” Allardyce said.
And, when asked whether he’d be interested in the Southampton job, Allardyce made his feelings rather clear.
“I’m off to Dubai next week, I can’t see myself taking a job in the next three weeks at least! I’ve booked Dubai for New Year.”
The Mirror add that David Moyes is also an option for Southampton, as is the former Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim.
Jardim led the principality club to the Ligue 1 title and the Champions League semi-finals as recently as 2017 but was given the boot after a dreadful start to the current campaign.
