Chelsea have Frank Lampard, Manchester United have Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but will we ever see Patrick Vieira return to North London to drag Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League?

Well the legendary Frenchman certainly has a return to the capital on his mind and, given how Unai Emery is regarded among huge sections of the famously hard-to-please Gunners fan base right now, a symbol of Arsenal’s golden era would be welcomed back with open arms.

“Is it my dream to coach Arsenal? Yes, like any player, when we do this job we want to reach the very top level,” Vieira told RMC Sport when asked whether he could make an emotional homecoming to a club he represented with class and distinction between 1996 and 2005.

Arsene Wenger of Arsenal talks with Patrick Vieira during the Barclays Premiership match between Fulham and Arsenal at Craven Cottage on September 11, 2004 in London.

At the age of 43, Vieira is making a name for himself in the dugout. After dragging New York City FC from 17th to second in the MLS, the former France international performed a minor miracle by guiding a Nice side without a senior, recognised striker to a seventh placed finish in Ligue 1, despite scoring just 30 goals in 38 top flight games.

And while the cynics will point to some less than thrilling football to suggest that he’s not ready to become Arsene Wenger’s true heir in North London, Viera’s ability to organise a backline would certainly be welcome after so many years of defensive indiscipline.

New York City FC head coach Patrick Vieira speaks at an interview with AFP during the club's annual media day on March 9, 2017, in New York.
