Ross McCrorie is already shining on loan at Portsmouth from Glasgow Rangers.

The sample size may be small but Ross McCrorie already looks like a natural at right-back.

After making his name at Rangers as a talented centre-half or a tough-tackling defensive midfielder, the 21-year-old is blossoming into an even more rounded player during a loan spell at Portsmouth on the English south coast.

In just his second outing for Pompey, McCrorie already has an entirely new position under his belt – and he’s adapted to it like, well, like Ross McCrorie tends to do when a challenge is put in front of him.

The Scotland U21 international, a real Swiss army knife of a footballer, was hailed by Portsmouth fans on Twitter after shining on the right-hand side during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland.

In fact, he was so impressive that Fratton Park boss Kenny Jackett has admitted that he’s already considering utilising McCrorie as a right-back on a regular basis, speaking to The News.

So if, or perhaps when, James Tavernier finally calls it a day and moves back south of the border, maybe Rangers won’t have to dig deep and spend big to replace their influential captain.

Tavernier has been linked with countless Premier League clubs over the last few months and, according to talkSPORT, Crystal Palace are already drawing up plans for a bid when the January transfer window opens. The Eagles still have £50 million burning a hole in their back pocket after selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United.

With five assists in just seven games this season already, finding a player capable of stepping into Tavernier’s shoes looks almost impossible. But McCrorie has a tendency to defy expectations.
