‘Roofe all over again’: Leeds fans express doubts about Jack Marriott

Championship trio Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday all like the look of Peterborough United’s £5m hotshot Jack Marriott.

There is no player in the Football League right now with more goals to their name than Jack Marriott.

The 23-year-old striker has been in quite extraordinary form since joining Peterborough United from Luton Town last summer. Marriott has netted 32 goals in 53 games in all competitions, including 26 in League One.

But that does not mean he would be a universally popular addition to Leeds United’s squad this summer.

According to the Mail, Leeds are rivalling Championship duo Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday for Marriott despite the fact that Peterborough are holding out for a hefty £5 million fee.

And while there are a number of Leeds fans who feel that Marriott, who idolises Sergio Aguero, is the kind of instinctive goal-scorer the club is badly lacking, Leeds must think carefully before paying such a huge figure for a player who is plying his trade in the third tier right now.

Scoring against Oldham and Rochdale is one thing, fidning the net with the same regularity in the Championship is a different proposition, and Marriott is completely unproven above League One level.

After all, it was only two years ago when Leeds paid £3 million to sign the League Two Player of the Year Kemar Roofe from Oxford United and he has not exactly set the world alight at Elland Road.

So should the Whites be a little sceptical about Marriott?
