Will Grigg has scored just one goal in eight League One games after joining Jack Ross’s Sunderland from Championship outfit Wigan Athletic.
Sunderland appeared to have signed the perfect replacement for their departed top scorer Josh Maja when Will Grigg finally arrived from Wigan Athletic in January.
After a series of failed bids, the Black Cats finally got their man on deadline day – paying a hefty £4 million according to the BBC.
On paper, Grigg looked worth every penny. This is a striker who has a fearsome record in League One, averaging over 20 goals a season in the division. He even lifted the title with Wigan Athletic just ten months ago.
Will Grigg has hardly been on fire in Sunderland colours however. In eight games, the Northern Irishman has scored just once and fired a blank again in Tuesday’s goalless draw away at promotion rivals Barnsley.
It would be unfair to blame Grigg and Grigg alone. Manager Jack Ross needs to find a system that suits his most naturally gifted goal-scorer and, so far, he has failed to do just that.
Grigg looks all at sea up front on his own and is crying out for a strike partner. Unless Ross adapts his style, and fast, that £4 million fee could be wasted.
