Championship table-toppers Leeds United let Romario Vieira go in the summer but his hopes of a move to League One Doncaster are now over.
Both the Vieira brothers left Leeds United this summer.
There was plenty of controversy when Ronaldo departed for Serie A outfit Sampdoria but Romario’s exit went comparatively under the radar. Despite a series of impressive performances for the U23s, the youngster of the Vieiras was released without ever making a first-team appearance in Leeds colours.
And it seems that, unlike his brother, finding a new club is proving rather difficult.
Romario Vieira has been on trial at League One Doncaster Rovers of late. But, speaking to the Doncaster Free Press, manager Grant McCann has explained why the Guinea Bissau international will not be handed a contract.
Romario’s left the club,” said McCann.
“Romario was more of a [long term] project and we felt, looking at the young lads who we’ve got at the club, it wouldn’t be the right thing to bring a player in that was on par with a Cody Prior or a Jacob Fletcher or a Morgan James.
“We’ve got to believe in the players that are here. They’ve been given pro contracts for a reason.”
Vieira was included in the first-team squad twice during the reign of Thomas Christiansen last season. But the fact that Doncaster have turned him down doesn’t exactly suggest that Leeds have made a mistake in calling time on his short-lived Leeds career.
