Leeds United may wish they could still call upon Rob Green – but he’s stuck behind Jonas Lossl at Huddersfield Town instead.
Huddersfield Town earned their place in the Premier League by way of intelligent scouting and astute recruitment from the German market. It’s only fitting, therefore, that one of their most impressive summer signings was not a club-record buy but a loan addition from a mid-table Bundesliga club.
Since arriving from Mainz on a season-long deal in the summer, Danish goalkeeper Jonas Lossl has comfortably filled the void created by Danny Ward’s return to Liverpool. Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at home to a Harry Kane-inspired Tottenham is nothing to be ashamed of and, in the six league games prior, Lossl had kept four clean sheets.
Therefore, Rob Green’s hopes of Premier League football this season already look to have been dashed in the form of Huddersfield’s number one. The veteran ‘keeper left Leeds United for one last stab at the big-time this summer, but he is yet to even make his debut for The Terriers.
In fact, Green’s only outing this season was the 5-1 EFL Cup thrashing of Newport County – when he was still a Leeds player.
Therefore, you wonder whether Green would have been better off fighting for his place at Elland Road this season instead.
Quality in reserve
After all, there’s a feeling that former Werder Bremen ‘keeper Felix Wiedwald had not really been tested until recent weeks. And, with Leeds’ hitherto impenetrable defence showing a few holes, the German looked shaky when called upon as the club conceded 8 times in recent days to Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and Cardiff City.
Green’s experience, therefore, could have come in handy to Leeds this season. He produced a number of virtuoso displays in the latter months of 2016/17 and, with Wiedwald suddenly under pressure, would have been welcomed back by the supporters with open arms.
Instead, he’s stuck on the bench at Huddersfield.
