It’s hard to believe that a number of Leeds United fans had concerns about Rob Green’s performances between the sticks earlier in the season. After the veteran keeper made a crucial mistake in a home defeat to Newcastle, demands grew for Marco Silvestri to be returned to the starting XI despite spending two seasons plagued by an inability to command his area.
Thank God Garry Monk retained the faith where many around him seemed to be losing theirs. According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Green is set to trigger an extension on his current deal to stay at Elland Road for another year.
And keeping the 37-year-old now appears a no-brainer. Since a run of shaky performances, the former England international has responded with a string of virtuoso displays.
Against Birmingham City on Friday and Bristol City last month in particular, Green’s experience and consistency provided the platform for two crucial victories and the fact that he has started all of Leeds’ league fixtures this season means he is almost certain to earn himself a second season at Elland Road after signing a one-year deal in the summer.
BBC journalist Adam Pope wrote on his official Twitter page earlier in the season that Green’s contract extension would be triggered after making a certain number of appearances so the fact that Silvestri has not had a look in under Monk suggests the former QPR ‘keeper is here to stay.
