Pedro Goncalves has impressed for Wolverhampton Wanderers at U23 level but will he make his Premier League debut this season?
Pedro Goncalves missed a sitter in Wolves Premier League Cup victory against Oxford United, but that did not stop U23 boss Rob Edwards from paying tribute to the talented young midfielder, as reported by the club’s official website.
Wolves’ reserves cruised to a 2-0 win against Oxford on Friday to book their place in the knockout stages but they could, and should, have won by more.
Goncalves missed from six yards against the League One club, failing to add himself to the score sheet alongside Niall Ennis and Paulo Alves.
But Edwards has taken the time to praise Goncalves, the former Valencia midfielder who has been one of Wolves’ most impressive performers at U23 level this season.
“Players have to pick themselves up after missing chances like that. I said to him that the next time you get that opportunity you’ll put that in the back of the net. He’s been outstanding for us this year, he’s a really good player and no one means to miss an opportunity,” Edwards said of the 20-year-old.
“The good thing is he was in the right place at the right time, just put the shot a few inches wide; the actual move itself, and the build-up – which he was heavily involved in before – was excellent.”
Goncalves moved to Wolves in the summer of 2017 and he made his first-team debut in Sheffield Wednesday, playing the final half hour of a 2-0 win at Hillsborough in the EFL Cup.
And it seems only a matter of time before he is rewarded with a first Premier League appearance, given that Goncalves has scored four goals and produced three assists for the U23 side this season.
