Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want to sign Bundesliga shot-stopper Alexander Nubel from Schalke.
Alexander Nubel didn’t deserve that.
In the end, it was Spain who were celebrating on Italian turf once the final whistle blew on a thrilling U21 European Championships, winning 2-1 on the night and taking revenge on a Germany side who pipped them to the title two years ago.
But things could have been so different had the German goalkeeper not gifted Spain their clinching goal midway through the second half.
Nubel had been so impressive throughout the tournament, showing why he has been labelled the ‘new Manuel Neuer’ with some exceptional footwork and a truly world-class save against Romania in the semi-finals – an unbelievable reflex stop which prevented Stefan Kuntz’s side from falling in the final four instead.
Bild claim that the 22-year-old Schalke stopper is a target for some of Europe’s biggest and best, including a Tottenham Hotspur side who appear to have chosen the right time to plan for life after Hugo Lloris.
But Nubel is not yet the finished article. It was he who spilled a tame Fabian Ruiz effort straight to Spain’s livewire forward Dani Olmo with 20 minutes to go in the final.
The Dinamo Zagreb forward made no mistake and Nubel paid the price with supporters on social media pointing the finger squarely at him.
