Graeme Shinnie has admitted that he let himself down after the Rangers linked midfielder was exposed again and again in Scotland’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan on Thursday night, while speaking to the Daily Record.

The influential Aberdeen captain, who has is apparently a target for Rangers according to the Express, has been in top form this season for Derek McInnes’s side.

And he was given a chance to impress for the national team in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier, starting at left-back in the injury-enforced absence of Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and Celtic’s Kieran Tierney.

But Shinnie, who has played in midfield at club level this season, struggled badly and was caught out for two of Kazakhstan’s three goals as Scotland slipped to one of the most humiliating defeats in their history.

“I can’t see myself getting back into the team now. On a personal note I am gutted in myself. I know I am so much better and I have waited so long to get a chance,” the 27-year-old said.

“It was a chance for me to show what I can do and I let myself down. To get that chance and to let the team down was disappointing. I don’t think I played well. It was frustrating on a personal note.

“I maybe got caught a bit cold at left back in terms of my positioning, especially for their second goal.”

According to the Express, Shinnie has dismissed the prospect of swapping Aberdeen for Rangers and following in the footsteps of Ryan Jack, who left Pittodrie for Ibrox two years ago.

But the midfielder could move south of the border with League One leaders Luton Town when his contract with the Dons expires in July.
