FC Basel are attempting to offload former Premier League target Jean-Paul Boetius in January, AD reports.
The 22-year-old attracted a number of admiring glances while making his name in the Eredivisie with Feyenoord, earning a place in Louis Van Gaal’s preliminary squad for the 2014 World Cup.
And the Daily Mail claimed back in 2015 that the likes of Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Southampton had expressed an interest in a player then rated at a measly £2 million – although none of the aforementioned quartet were reportedly intrigued enough to make a formal offer.
However, Boetius eventually decided upon a shock switch to perennial Swiss title winners and Champions League group-stage fodder Basel though, thanks to a series of injuries, his impact has been limited at St Jakob-Park.
And Marcel Brands, Technical Manager of PSV Eindhoven, claimed to AD that the Eredivisie giants they were offered the chance to bring the winger back to the Netherlands on loan, only to turn down the opportunity.
And, a year-and-a-half after reportedly expressing an interest, it appears that Newcastle would be the most likely to reignite any interest.
The Chronicle reported in December that Rafa Benitez wanted a left winger in January with Ghanaian Christian Atsu jetting off to the African Cup of Nations and a loan deal for Boetius would appear the ideal kind of low-risk, stop-gap solution.
Meanwhile, Tottenham, one of the club’s most heavily tipped to make a move, would not be expected to challenge for his signature with Mauricio Pochettino’s 3-4-2-1 system ill-suited to natural wingers.
