Premier League duo Everton and Crystal Palace were linked with Ruben Aguilar before he joined Ligue 1 strugglers Monaco instead.

Monaco narrowly avoided relegation from Ligue 1 last season, just two years after beating PSG to the title with a star-studded team inspired brilliantly by Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho and Bernardo Silva.
Yet if fans of the principality club were expecting a return to the top in 2020, it seems they have been sadly mistaken. Two games into the new campaign, Monaco are bottom of the table after suffering successive 3-0 defeats to Lyon and Metz.
Things have not gone to plan for Ruben Aguilar since his £8.3 million move from Montpellier (Get French Football News). The right-back endured a torrid debut against Lyon and received a straight red card after just 34 minutes against Metz, flying into a two-footed challenge that was only going to end with in an early bath.
According to Calciomercato, Everton and Crystal Palace were keen to sign Aguilar on the back of an excellent campaign at a well-drilled, high-flying Montpellier side. Did he join the wrong club in the prime of his career?

It is too soon to write off the 26-year-old as yet another flop in a Monaco side who’s recruitment has left a lot to be desired in the last two years; Aguilar should return after suspension and provide some much needed tenacity and solidity to Leonardo Jardim’s back line.
But Monaco aren’t going anywhere fast, with or without Aguilar at the back.
