Rangers are reportedly set to announce the most expensive arrival of Gerrard’s reign, with Brighton defender Goldson arriving at Ibrox for £3million.

It would be easy to attribute the marquee signings of Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor down to Steven Gerrard’s arrival at Anfield.

But McGregor would probably have seized the chance to return to Ibrox no matter who was at the helm. Arfield, meanwhile, is a big Rangers fan who has spoken openly about his desire to return to the blue half of Glasgow.

Jamie Murphy, however, had spent time on loan at Rangers last season and a permanent deal was always going to be struck, while Gerrard had help from Liverpool in landing Ovie Ejaria on a temporary basis.

Connor Goldson, however, feels like a game-changer.

According to the Daily Star, the Brighton defender is set to join in a £3 million deal and it seems that Gerrard was the main factor.

Goldson is a boyhood Liverpool fan and it is understood that the desire to work with Anfield legend Gerrard encouraged him to give up Premier League football, and ignore bigger, more lucrative offers from elsewhere, to pull on the royal blue strip.

Gerrard’s appointment was certainly a risk, with no senior managerial experience to back up his credentials, but what he does offer is a status, a reputation and a sway in the transfer market. Who wouldn’t want to play for one of the best, most awe-inspiring footballers of his generation?

Goldson’s impending arrival might be the clearest sign yet of why Rangers put their faith in Liverpool’s former number eight.
