Premier League duo Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United have been linked with Mexico’s Gold Cup winner Alvarez, so have Celtic.

Edson Alvarez of Mexico bites his medal after wining the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019 final match between United States and Mexico at Soldier Field on July 7, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois.

Gold Cup winning Mexico ace Edson Alvarez has admitted to Goal that he is edging closer and closer to a move to Europe with West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers linked with the versatile midfielder.

Record claimed on Friday that West Ham had suddenly thrown themselves into the race to sign one of the brightest talents to emerge out of central America over the last decade or so. Manuel Pellegrini’s side apparently made a formal bid.

Wolves are still the favourites, however, due to the attractive project on offer at Molineux and the chance for Alvarez to reunite with his international team-mate Raul Jimenez in the Black Country.

And after starring as Tata Martino’s Mexico beat the USA in the Gold Cup final, Club America’s 21-year-old talisman has admitted that he is likely to be playing his football on the other side of The Atlantic very soon.

“Possibilities are opening up. I’m really happy to be more and more close to this dream that I desire with all my heart and hopefully it will be the best for me,” Alvarez said when discussing a move to Europe.

Scottish Premiership champions Celtic cannot be discounted yet either. Bolavip claimed in June that The Hoops are still keen to land Alvarez, despite failing with a £5 million bid in the winter (ESPN).

A combative, commanding and technically gifted player, Alvarez would either strengthen Neil Lennon’s back line alongside Christopher Jullien or perhaps emerge as the long-term successor to captain Scott Brown in the centre of the park.

With Mediotempo claiming that Alvarez has an £8 million release clause in his contract though, he might be a little too expensive for Celtic at this stage.
