Yoann Barbet has been linked with a reunion with Dean Smith at Aston Villa, having impressed in the Championship with Brentford.
Yoann Barbet has told Football London that he is in talks over a new deal with Brentford amid reports linking him with a move to Aston Villa.
The 25-year-old defender has been a key player for the Bees this season, starting 29 Championship games and proving invaluable due to his ability to play at left-back or centre-half.
It is this versatile which has sparked rumours of a switch to Aston Villa, and a reunion with Dean Smith, at the end of the season, as reported by Express and Star.
Smith was in the Griffin Park dugout when Barbet arrived from French lower league outfit Chamois Niortais in 2015.
And, with his contract due to expire at the end of the current campaign, Aston Villa will have reportedly been hoping to snap him up for free.
But, speaking to Football London, Barbet has admitted that talks are underway about an extended stay at Brentford – although nothing is agreed just yet.
“We talk with the club but we don’t know yet,” he said.
“We’ve been talking but there is nothing at the moment. So we will see in the next few weeks.”
Villa will be hoping that negotiations don’t go to plan as Barbet would be a fine addition to Smith’s squad. The Midland giants are still missing real depth at left-back with January signing Kortney Hause preferring a role in the centre while Neil Taylor continues to flatter to deceive.
