Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham is reportedly a target for English Championship side Aston Villa.

Third choice at Rangers or number one at Aston Villa? The choice is surely obvious for Wes Foderingham, with the Midland giants interested in signing the 27-year-old goalkeeper this summer according to the Scottish Daily Star (page 47, June 5).

Foderingham’s Rangers career seems to be over right now with the Scottish Sun claiming that Steven Gerrard has demoted him to third choice behind Jak Alnwick and Allan McGregor as he prepares to begin his reign at Ibrox.

Foderingham might not be the most consistent of goalkeepers, he made a fair few mistakes last season to contribute to Rangers’ poor defensive record, but he is far too good to be stuck in the stands in Scotland.

Should the former Swindon Town shot-stopper make the move to Villa Park, however, he would surely be the undisputed first choice for manager Steve Bruce; particularly now Sam Johnstone has departed upon the expiry of his loan spell from Manchester United.

Aston Villa may be in a dreadful financial position right now, with their hopes of challenging for a play-off place next season looking slim, but they are still one of the biggest and most historic clubs in English football and should represent a tempting option for Foderingham as he considers his future.

After all, better playing regularly in the English championship than making the odd cup cameo at Rangers.
