Scottish Premiership giants Rangers are understood to be confident of signing Croatian centre-back Nikola Katic from Slaven Belupo.

Rangers fans can be forgiven for resorting to Wikipedia when the Daily Record claimed that the Ibrox giants were confident of signing the Croatian centre-back Nikola Katic.

The 21-year-old plays in Croatia’s top flight for Slaven Belupo and it is understood that Rangers look set to beat Spartak Moscow to a deal for the £2million-rated talent, despite the fact the Russian giants can offer Champions League football.

But what can the Ibrox faithful expect from Katic? Well, considering that the 6ft 4ins centre-back has already made his debut for Croatia and has been handed the armband at club level suggests that he is not your average 21-year-old defender.

And, perhaps unsurprisingly given his height, Katic would give Rangers much more of an aerial presence in defence. According to the Daily Record, Katic wins almost nine aerial duels per game with a success rate of around 64 per cent.

Of all Rangers’ current centre-backs, only Bruno Alves can better that tally and he is expected to leave Glasgow this summer. Katic is also taller than all of Rangers’ defenders including Connor Goldson, who is expected to join him in moving to Ibrox this summer.

So if Rangers do pull off a deal for Katic, the promising youngster could be Rangers’ biggest presence in the back line.

Considering that the club lacked a little leadership and frequently looked vulnerable against taller, stronger centre-forwards, you can see why Katic has been identified as a potential addition.
