Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are reportedly in danger of losing Rogic to Russian Premier League champions Zenit St Petersburg.
Celtic are facing an unwelcome battle to hold on to Australian midfielder Tom Rogic, with Herald Scotland claiming that Zenit St Petersburg are set to launch a £9 million bid for his services.
Rogic’s future at Parkhead appeared to be up in the air not long ago with the Scottish Premiership champions fighting tooth and nail to bring in another gifted number ten, David Turnbull, from league rivals Motherwell.
With that £3.25 million deal falling through after a bizarre will-he-won’t-he saga, however, the last thing Celtic need is for Rogic to walk away from Parkhead.
But Zenit have been keeping an eye on the enigmatic playmaker ever since their Europa League meeting with The Hoops in early 2018, though the Russian giants will need to offer in excess of £15 million to convince Neil Lennon’s side to cash in. That is far, far more than the £400,000 Celtic paid Central Coast Mariners for a little-known midfielder six years ago, as reported by the BBC.
How does Rogic himself feel about the prospect of joining the reigning champions of Russia?
Well, according to The Herald, he’d rather test himself in the Premier League but the prospect of playing Champions League football, and earning a rather lucrative contract in a city as beautiful as St Petersburg, may be too good to turn down.
Though Celtic really cannot afford to lose a player who, on his day, is capable of turning the game in their favour with a long-range wondergoal or a glorious through ball.
