The youngster was in inspired form at Anfield. Therefore, reports that Wolverhampton Wanderers could farm him out surely will not come to much.

On initial inspection, Wolves should snap Newcastle United’s hand clean off if they are offered Grant Hanley in the final few days of the transfer window. According to The Sun, Paul Lambert’s side could sign the Scotland international on loan until the end of the season with an option to buy in the summer.

Lambert has made no secret of his desire to add experienced second tier campaigners to a squad chock-full of youth and foreign imports and Hanley, a former Blackburn captain who averaged 38 league appearances in the last four seasons at Ewood Park, could prove the perfect addition regardless of his difficulties on Tyneside.

However, The Sun adds that Wolves could sacrifice 21-year-old Kortney Hause in preparation for Hanley’s arrival. Suddenly, the deal does not seem such a no-brainer.

Hause may have endured his fair share of struggles this season with a number of error-strewn performances testing the patience of Wolves supporters. However, there is a reason why the England under-21 international has long been identified as one of the brightest defensive talents outside the Premier League.

And, in Wolves’ famous FA Cup victory at Anfield on Saturday, Hause offered a timely reminder of his potential. A classy, composed presence alongside goal-scorer Richard Stearman, Hause delivered his most impressive performance of the campaign on one of football’s most intimidating stages.

It was, in short, a defensive masterclass. One that makes a mockery of reports linking him with a swift January exit.

Surely Paul Lambert is thinking along the same lines.
