Rui Patricio is reportedly keen to leave Sporting Lisbon this summer and Wolverhampton Wanderers want to take him to the Premier League.
The race for Rui Patricio is hotting up.
The Mail stated on Friday that Wolverhampton Wanderers were attempting to hijack Napoli’s deal for the Portuguese number one. Patricio has a £30 million release clause in his Sporting Lisbon contract and Wolves are attempting to add some experience and star quality to their squad as they prepare for life in the Premier League.
It has been reported that Wolves were set to sign Patricio, who is represented by Jorge Mendes’ Gestifute agency, for a fee of around £15.8 million. Gestifute claimed that Sporting suddenly demanded an extra £1.75 million and the deal fell through, despite a medical already taking place.
But this does not mean the chase is over.
The Express and Star state that Wolves could return with a new bid for Patricio, buoyed by the news that he wants to leave the Estadio Jose Alvalade this summer after a tumultuous season both on and off the pitch at Sporting.
Patricio, who has 68 caps for his country and is expected to start ahead of the experienced Beto for Fernando Santos’ side this summer, is one of the most accomplished and underrated goalkeepers on the continent.
He has spent his entire career with Sporting, making 467 appearances to date.
