Swansea City’s relegation from the Premier League is likely to cost them Alfie Mawson with Wolverhampton Wanderers the latest top flight side linked.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been heavily tipped to move for Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson in the betting markets recently. Sky Bet even dropped the price of Mawson heading to Molineux to just 2/1 earlier this week.

And now this makes sense.

Because The Mail (live blog, 11.49am) reports that Wolves are considering making a bid for Swansea’s highly-rated defender as Nuno Espirito Santo aims to get his squad ready for the rigours of Premier League football.

Mawson has been one of Swansea’s standout players over the last two seasons. And the 24-year-old, who was called up by England in the spring but remains uncapped, is expected to bid farewell to the Liberty Stadium after the South Welsh side were relegated to the Championship.

The Mail adds that Swansea value Mawson at £20 million, a fee that seems to have resulted in a potential move to West Ham United hitting the buffers.

Wolves have money to burn however with their billionaire Chinese owners willing to spend big. At £20 million, Mawson would become their new record signing, overtaking the £15.8 million they spent to sign Ruben Neves from FC Porto a year ago.

Wolves boasted the Championship’s joint-best defensive record in 2017/18, keeping 24 clean sheets in 46 games overall. But neither Willy Boly or Connor Coady can compete with Mawson when it comes to Premier League experience.
