Maxi Gomez has scored nine La Liga goals for a struggling Celta Vigo side and could join the Premier League with West Ham United.

West Ham United have stepped up their interest in Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez and are hoping that a pay-packet of £80,000 a week is enough to lure the Uruguayan international to the London Stadium, as reported by the Mirror (28 March, page 56).

Gomez has been heavily linked with a move to West Ham for almost a year now after making a huge impact in Spain in the baby blue shirt of Celta.

The old-school centre-forward netted 17 La Liga goals in his debut season and has another nine across 2018/19.

Celta have been unwilling to sell Gomez for a penny less than his £43 million release clause but his price-tag will be halved if his side are relegated. With Celta four points adrift of safety after losing four of their last five games, this is a genuine possibility.

The Mirror believes that West Ham are willing to pay £80,000 a week for Gomez, who has been identified as the successor for want-away talisman Marko Arnautovic.

The Sun reported in February that Chelsea and Tottenham are also keen on the so-called ‘new Luis Suarez’ while Mundo Deportivo believes he would love to join Liverpool.

All three could comfortably offer more than £80,000 a week.
